  • ‘ŌPELU POINT

We're honored to work with the Kīpahulu ʻOhana and Maui County to return ‘Ōpelu Point to community ownership and stewardship!

This 9.5-acre parcel in Kīpahulu overlooks Lelekea Bay and is a traditional observation point for the Kīpahulu community to manage and maintain a healthy fishery. ʻŌpelu Point will provide a place to hold educational programs teaching current and future generations about Kīpahulu's traditional fishery management methods, and can serve as a homebase for the proposed Kīpahulu Moku Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA).

In addition to being returned to community ownership, ʻŌpelu Point is now also permanently protected by a conservation easement co-held by Hawaiʻi Land Trust and Maui County. Mahalo to the County of Maui's Open Space, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, and Scenic Views Preservation Program for providing the necessary funds to make this acquisition possible, and to all those who support the Kīpahulu ʻOhana, and Hawaiʻi Land Trust!

‘Ōpelu Point is now in the hands of the generational ʻohana of place who hold lineal kuleana to care for their home. This kuleana provides confidence that the permanent protection of the land will truly serve and build resilient communities for generations to come!
